Custer State Park

South Dakota

This permanent visitor center exhibition encourages visitors to get off the beaten path and explore all that the park has to offer. Stunning photomurals and replica rock and trees bring the beauty of Custer indoors. Fun interactives—from a rock climbing wall to a bison safety game—communicate the adventures to be had!

Designer: Split Rock Studios

Owner: South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks

Using an interactive map, visitors can explore Custer State Park, learning about the wide variety of experiences the park has to offer.

Large-scale bison displays introduce visitors to this iconic species, which can be found at the park.

The bison displays are freestanding and two-sided, with interpretation on both sides.

The display in the foreground lets visitors compare themselves to a bison. The interactive behind that teaches people about bison safety: if they walk too close to the screens, a bison appears to charge at them. On-screen text helps visitors understand bison body language.

Sculpted rockwork gives visitors a taste of the spires and towers that they can see in the park.
